Family Tax Benefit Calculator
What Is the Family Tax Benefit?
The Family Tax Benefit (FTB) is an Australian Government payment administered by Services Australia to help families with the cost of raising children. It is split into two parts: FTB Part A, which is paid per child based on family income, and FTB Part B, which provides extra support to single-parent families and families with one main income earner.
Eligibility and payment amounts depend on your family income, the number and ages of your children, and your care arrangements. The rates are adjusted each year on 1 July to account for changes in the cost of living.
How the FTB Calculator Works
Our Family Tax Benefit calculator estimates your fortnightly and annual FTB entitlements based on your family circumstances. Enter your combined family income, the number of children, their ages, and whether you are a single parent or couple. The calculator applies current income thresholds and taper rates to determine your estimated payment.
FTB Part A reduces once your family income exceeds the lower income threshold and cuts out entirely above the upper threshold. FTB Part B is income-tested on the lower earner’s income for couples. Understanding these thresholds helps you plan around changes in income such as returning to work or receiving a pay rise.
Maximising Your Family Tax Benefit
To ensure you receive your full entitlement, keep your income estimate up to date with Services Australia. Overestimating your income means smaller fortnightly payments, while underestimating can result in a debt at the end of the financial year. You can also choose to receive FTB as a lump sum after lodging your tax return, which avoids the risk of overpayment.
Families with children in approved child care may also be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy, which is assessed separately. Combining both payments can significantly reduce the overall cost of raising children in Australia.
